Why the Illawarra Medical Community Should Support the Global Medical Foundation of Australia
As a father of three children, one girl and two boys, and the owner of South Coast Orthodontics in Corrimal, in the beautiful Illawarra region, I often reflect on the privileges my family enjoys.
My children have access to:
- Quality healthcare
- A strong education
- Nutritious meals
- The freedom to pursue hobbies like dirt biking and afternoons at the park
- The safety to dream without the weight of extreme hardship
But the Illawarra, while idyllic, is not a bubble. It is deeply connected to a broader and far more complex world. Beyond our stunning beaches and welcoming communities lie millions who face poverty, limited healthcare access, displacement, and the devastating impact of conflict.
Today, I call upon my neighbours and fellow members of the medical and dental community to join me in supporting the Global Medical Foundation of Australia (GMF) in their mission to make a tangible difference.
The Mission of the Global Medical Foundation of Australia
The Global Medical Foundation of Australia is driven by a powerful mission: To provide medical, surgical, dental, and educational support to marginalised communities across the world.
With 1.3 billion people living in multidimensional poverty across 104 developing countries, GMF works to ensure that those often forgotten receive essential care and life-changing resources.
Their mission is not just clinical, it is deeply human. It challenges us to ask:
How can we extend our hands and hearts to those in need?
A Vision Every Parent Understands
Imagine a world where:
- Every child has access to healthcare
- Every parent knows their child can receive treatment
- Education is not a luxury
- Basic medical care is not determined by geography
This is the vision that drives GMF.
And as a parent, it resonates deeply with me.
Because while my children can enjoy a splash at Kiama or a visit to Wollongong for toy shopping, countless families around the world worry about far more fundamental concerns: survival, safety, and medical access.
Global Impact | From Ethiopia to Gaza
GMF has conducted missions in countries including:
- Ethiopia
- India
- Gaza
In these regions, communities often face extreme poverty, instability, and limited healthcare infrastructure. The resilience of the families GMF serves is a powerful reminder of our shared humanity, and of our responsibility to one another.
When we witness the struggles faced by families in conflict zones, especially those displaced and in urgent need of medical care, distance cannot become an excuse for indifference. Compassion must travel further than geography.

A Call to the Illawarra Medical and Dental Community
As healthcare professionals in the Illawarra, we are privileged to practise in a region where infrastructure, education, and medical systems are strong. But with privilege comes responsibility.
I urge each capable member of our Illawarra medical and dental community to stand with the Global Medical Foundation of Australia in their noble mission. Whether through financial support, volunteering, or advocacy, every action moves us closer to a more equitable world.

Final Reflection
As a father, I want to raise my children in a world defined not only by comfort and opportunity, but by compassion and responsibility. The privileges we enjoy here in the Illawarra are not universal.
We cannot allow distance to separate us from the struggles of others. We can, however, choose to act. And together, we can build a world where healthcare, dignity, and hope are not limited by geography.
Yours truly,
