Advancing Orthodontics with the Carriere Motion 3D Appliance
As the owner of South Coast Orthodontics in the Illawarra, I was recently honoured to be appointed by Henry Schein as a speaker on the Carriere Motion 3D Appliance, an orthodontic innovation transforming how we approach sagittal correction and comprehensive treatment.
I’d like to share insights into this appliance, my clinical experience using it, and how it is influencing modern orthodontic care.

With nearly two decades of clinical use, it has gained widespread adoption among orthodontic specialists globally. Its presence across dozens of countries and use in over a million cases reflects strong professional confidence in its effectiveness.
Peer-reviewed case reports and retrospective studies support its clinical versatility. Notably, Dr Luis Carrière’s 2016 publication on non-surgical correction of severe skeletal Class III malocclusion became one of the most downloaded papers on the Journal of Clinical Orthodontics website. highlighting professional interest in this treatment approach.

The concept draws inspiration from organic structures and skeletal biomechanics. Its mechanics mimic aspects of hip joint and arm rotation, allowing effective sagittal correction through a simplified and efficient system.
Learning from Nature and Architecture
The philosophy behind the appliance aligns with principles seen in the work of Antoni Gaudí.
Gaudí’s use of curves for structural strength mirrors orthodontic goals of stability and balance. The appliance incorporates catenary curve concepts to maintain arch integrity while achieving sagittal correction.
This aligns with the “Sagittal First” philosophy, establishing a stable Class I platform before detailed finishing.
Improving Efficiency in Orthodontic Treatment
Sagittal correction is often the most demanding stage of orthodontic care.
By addressing it first, orthodontists can:
