Hello,
I’m an absolute foodie, and I can absolutely testify that the restaurants, cafes and eateries around Corrimal are peak delicious. A short walk or drive to nearby suburbs such as Towradgi, Bellambi, Russell Vale, Woonoona, Bulli, Balgownie, Shellharbour and Wollongong reveal one truth: Illawarra is home to some of the best kept international culinary secrets.
I could go on and on about food in the region, but as I’m an orthodontist and not a food influencer, I’ll focus on something a little more practical; how to get rid of food stuck in your braces.
Yes, I know that having food stuck in your braces is frustrating, unglamorous and uncomfortable. However, it’s a common issue that many people face during their orthodontic treatment. Here’s some advice on how to effectively deal with this annoying inconvenience:
1. Be proactive with oral hygiene
Maintaining excellent oral hygiene is crucial when you have braces. Brushing your teeth after every meal, using a soft-bristled toothbrush, and paying extra attention to the areas around your braces will help prevent food from getting stuck. Additionally, flossing regularly, using interdental brushes, or a water flosser can dislodge any stubborn food particles.
2. Rinse with water
When food is stuck in your braces, a simple rinse with water can often do the trick. Swish water around your mouth vigorously, focusing on the areas where the food is lodged. This can help dislodge smaller particles and provide temporary relief until you can properly clean your teeth.
3. Use a proxy brush or interdental picks
Proxy brushes, also known as interdental brushes, are small, cone-shaped brushes that can be used to clean between your braces and teeth. Gently insert the brush between the wires and brackets, moving it back and forth to remove any trapped food particles. Interdental picks, which resemble tiny toothpicks, can also be used to dislodge food from hard-to-reach areas. We provide free samples for all our patients here at South Coast Orthodontics.
4. Avoid using sharp objects
While it may be tempting to use sharp objects like toothpicks or pins to remove food stuck in your braces, it’s important to avoid doing so. These objects can damage your braces, wires, or even injure your gums. Stick to orthodontic-friendly tools like proxy brushes or interdental picks, which are specifically designed for this purpose.
5. Carry a braces-friendly travel kit
To be prepared for any situation, consider carrying a small travel kit with essential oral hygiene tools. Include a travel-sized toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, interdental brushes, and a small mirror. Having these items readily available will allow you to address any food stuck in your braces promptly, even when you’re away from home.
6. Choose braces-friendly foods:
Prevention is always better than a cure. Opting for braces-friendly foods can significantly reduce the chances of food getting stuck. Avoid sticky, chewy, or hard foods that can easily become trapped in your braces. Instead, choose softer options like cooked vegetables, lean meats, pasta, and soft fruits. Cutting food into smaller, bite-sized pieces can also help minimise the risk of getting food stuck.
While having food stuck in your braces can be bothersome, following these tips will help you effectively deal with the issue. Remember, maintaining good oral hygiene, using the right tools, and making wise food choices are key to preventing food from getting trapped in your braces. If you’re experiencing persistent difficulties or have concerns, do let myself and the South Coast Orthodontics team know. With proper guidance, care and attention, you can enjoy your orthodontic journey with minimal interruptions or changes to your food choices.
Yours sincerely,
